ABOUT SEBUMI

SEBUMI is a music group that explores the rich musical heritage of Bengkulu’s coastal Malay culture through the convergence of tradition, local identity, and contemporary sonic experimentation. Rooted in the collective memories of coastal communities, SEBUMI weaves music into a space where history, social life, tradition, and the dynamics of a changing world come together.

Through a distinctive blend of traditional instruments, Bengkulu’s signature percussion, Malay musical idioms, and modern music production techniques, SEBUMI creates an immersive musical experience that remains deeply rooted in local culture while embracing the evolving landscape of contemporary music.

For SEBUMI, tradition is not merely a legacy of the past, but a living source of creativity one that continues to grow, evolve, and discover new expressions through dialogue across generations.

ARTISTIC STATEMENT

Sound is memory. Music is how a community tells its story.

SEBUMI explores the cultural heritage of Bengkulu’s coastal communities, where different identities, traditions, languages, and life experiences come together. From the pulse of percussion and the flowing melodies of Malay music to the textures of contemporary electronic sounds, each composition takes listeners on a journey to rediscover the connections between people, place, history, and community.

Through Melantika Pesisir, SEBUMI celebrates the cultural landscape of Bengkulu’s coastline, including the historical memories of Kampung Cina Bengkulu, everyday community life, cultural diversity, and the meeting of tradition and modernity.

For SEBUMI, music is more than a way to preserve the sounds of the past. It is a commitment to keeping these traditions alive and meaningful, so they can continue to be heard, felt, and passed on to future generation
